ABC's freshman comedy "Happy Endings" rises double digits and CBS' "Survivor: Redemption Island" hits a low.

Fox continued to dominate Wednesday nights with American Idol and rookie comedy Breaking In.

American Idol's (21.7 million total viewers, 6.9 rating in adults 18-49 demo) top six performance show was down a mere 3 percent from the previous week, according to preliminary Nielsen numbers. (But Fox is saying that the demo rating will likely go up a few tenths when finals come in.)

Idol was still the most-watched and highest-rated program of the night, retaining all of adults 18-49 and up 12 percent in total viewers versus the same telecast last year.

The 90-minute Idol helped new comedy Breaking In (7.6 million, 2.6), toplined by Christian Slater, which was up in total viewers and the demo. Fox -- averaging 18.2 million and a 5.8 -- easily won the night in both categories.

CBS placed a distant second in viewers (9.2 million) and the demo (2.3) with Survivor: Redemption Island (10.9 million, 3.0) reaching a new low. Reruns of Criminal Minds (9.1 million, 2.1) and spinoff Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior (7.5 million, 1.7) followed.

Half of ABC's three-hour comedy lineup were repeats, with new episodes of Better With You (4.8 million, 1.5) and Cougar Town (5.6 million, 2.1) hitting series and season lows, respectively. Midseason comedy Happy Endings (5.2 million, 2.1), however, saw a 17 percent boost.

NBC aired an encore of The Voice (6 million, 2.1) -- the day after it became the season's highest-rated debut -- after a NBC News special (5.2 million, 1.2) about the royal wedding, set to air on television early Friday morning in the U.S.

The CW’s America's Next Top Model (2.3 million, 1.0), which was renewed earlier this week along with four other veteran series, hit a season high in viewers and in women 18-34 (1.7).
