'Glee' Season Finale to Feature Matthew Morrison Track (Exclusive)

The actor will perform a song from his upcoming album in the Fox series’ May 24 episode

The actor will perform a song from his upcoming album in the Fox series’ May 24 episode.

Glee star Matthew Morrison will sing “Still Got Tonight,” the single from his self-titled album (out Tuesday), as part of the show’s New York-themed Season 2 finale, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.
Morrison's character Will Schuester will perform the sweeping ballad, which was co-written by American Idol Season 8 winner Kris Allen along with Andrew Frampton and Steve Kipner, alone on a stage in an empty theater -- a far cry from the big dance number that the series had originally planned -- in a scene directed by Glee creator Ryan Murphy.

Morrison told THR that, after he first approached Murphy about including one of his songs in an episode, the producers opted to change the scene into something bigger.

“It was going to be just a big dance piece with me doing this big dance number,” Morrison said. “But they said, ‘We want you to sing it and make it a big moment.’ ”

Murphy told THR that he discussed featuring Morrison’s song with 20th Century Fox Television chairman Dana Walden, who agreed to use a track from the actor’s upcoming album if it worked for his character, who has always been a dreamer.

“It’s about aspiration,” Murphy said. “It worked because we wanted to do a scene where Matt goes into a Broadway hall and sings something alone. Plus, Matt is such a great team player and he’s done so much for different Glee charities.”

Added Murphy, “We worked really hard to make it feel organic to the show.”

Morrison, meanwhile, is so proud of how the scene turned out, he says it might wind up being the music video for the song.

Glee’s Season 2 finale airs May 24 on Fox.
